How to Declutter for your Move

How to Declutter for your Move

Moving house presents a perfect opportunity to clean out the house and get rid of items you will not need once you start your new life at your new home. And whether you're planning to hire a full-service moving company or if you're moving on your own, reducing clutter prior to moving day will not only save you time and energy but can also save money.

To keep moving day much simpler and inexpensive as possible, declutter before you start packing. So where do you begin?

1. Give yourself time

As soon as you learn you're moving, decide what to pack and what to get rid of. Plan and prepare your moving supplies at least two weeks in advance. Carve out a few hours a day to walk through each and every room or closet in your home and write down everything you see. By doing this you won't be tempted to just pack your stuff in the box and be done with it.

2. Clear out unused items

First off, toss out all the items that you no longer want or need such as old remotes, damaged electronic appliances or college textbooks you haven't read since graduation. For those items that are still in good working condition, you can sell them or donate them.

3. Use extras

Use up excess household goods and toiletries such as tissue paper, toothpaste or shampoo so you’ll have lesser items to move. If you happen to run out of these items, buy a smaller size to get you through the move.

4. Use the three-box decluttering trick

When decluttering every room in the house, bring three boxes - one box for things you'll keep, one for stuff you will sell or donate and one for things you'll throw away. As you go through each room sorting out each item, drop them into one of the three boxes.

5. Donate or sell

Decluttering before the move not only saves you money, it can help you earn a little extra money too. Re-evaluate all your possessions and get rid of anything you do not need. Host a garage sale a few weeks before you move, and sell the things that are still in condition but you are not taking with you.

If you are not in a hurry, you can sell these items online through Facebook marketplace or Ebay so more people will see the stuff you are selling.

It is also a good idea to donate whatever you have left that someone else might need such as your old clothes or books that you won't ever read or use again.

6. Hire a junk removal service

Hiring a junk removal company is the most convenient option since you get trained professionals to do all the heavy lifting and dumping for you.

And although this service does come with a price, it's actually cheaper than doing the procedure on your own. Hiring such a company means saving your time and energy.

Moving to a new home is an extremely busy and exciting time. So, before packing all your stuff take the time to declutter and take inventory of what is truly important to you. You’ll appreciate the lighter load and you’ll have a clutter-free home.
