Moving large and bulky items such as couches and sofas or beds and mattresses from one location to the next doesn’t sound like an easy task. The sheer size, awkward shape and may not always fit through your doorways and hallways. While it’s definitely better to enlist two or three friends or hire professional home movers in Canada to help you out when you’re moving home, life doesn’t always work out that way - which means you have to move your sofa all by yourself.

As always when moving home, practising safe techniques to avoid back injuries and protecting your items and home is something you must seriously think of beforehand. Fortunately, with little knowledge and planning, you will know how to move a sofa the way pros do it. Here’s a guide on how to move a sofa.

Equipment you will need

  • Moving dolly / Furniture sliders

  • Gloves

  • Furniture straps

  • Plastic wrap

  • Moving blankets

  • Measuring tape

Measure and plan

Measure your sofa from all angles and jot down all measurements. You can use a measuring tape to do so. You should get the width, height and diagonal depth. Next, measure your doorways, corners, stairwells, hallways and elevator doors to ensure that your sofa will actually fit. And if at all possible, consider moving it in pieces.

Plan the path you’ll take and make sure to clear any possible obstructions that will cause a trip hazard out of your way.

Disassemble

This is necessary to avoid any delays while moving your sofa as loose pillows may hinder people's movement. Remove cushions, legs, other decor and pack these items in a large garbage bag separately. Make sure to label the box you are packing them with so you can easily find it when it’s time to reassemble.

Wrap it up

Wrap the piece entirely in a protective material such as moving blankets or shrink wrap. This will surely prevent any damage before you put it in the vehicle. Don’t forget to secure the blanket with furniture straps.

Get to sliding

Since the sofa is a large item of furniture, it may be easier for you to move a couch using furniture sliders. In addition to protecting your floors, furniture sliders will let you slide heavy and bulky furniture much easier and navigate without damaging your floors. Just place a slider under each sofa leg and push your big sofa towards the door. Get such sliders from a local hardware store (if you’re planning a DIY move) or from your chosen moving company.

If you’re using a flat furniture dolly, have one person tilt the sofa to one side and slowly push the moving dolly under it. Use moving straps or bungee straps to secure the sofa.

Getting your couch into the truck

Now you have successfully moved the couch out of your home it’s time to transport your sofa to the moving truck. Check to make sure the ramp is clean and dry then proceed with great caution as that is the moment when bad accidents can lead to a world of trouble. Once you get the couch loaded, secure it in place to the side of the van in order to save space and to prevent it from shifting around.
