Whether it's a new job opportunity or maybe a better financial situation or moving for the first time out of your parents home, leaving your old house and moving into a new one is extremely exciting. Though there's a lot of to-dos from budgeting, looking for professional movers and gathering moving supplies, you can make your move easier by staying organized and doing some chores in advance.  So, to help you have a stress-free and fun moving experience we've gathered these helpful tips to make the moving process go more smoothly.

Find a good home mover

If you don't want to deal with the packing, transporting and unpacking of all your belongings, then leave it to the pros. By hiring professional home movers all you need to do is set the date and time which suits you, and they will do the rest. Hiring a moving company will not only take a great deal of burden off of you but will also make the moving experience easier and worry-free for the whole family. Make sure to gather at least 3 to 5 quotes from moving companies so you have plenty to choose from. Make sure to check reviews so you will have an idea of what type of movers you are going to deal with.

Change your address

It’s best to change your address before the day of the move. This is also the perfect opportunity to inform your friends, employer, and specific institutions such as the bank or credit card company of your new address. You don't want your bank or any other personal documents to be sent to your old address.

Transferring the utilities

You must transfer the utilities between the two homes - internet service provider, cable TV, electricity etc. Make sure to contact your utility service provider and let them know about your move a few weeks in advance. You also need to schedule your disconnect and connect dates for gas and electricity. Moreover, contact your cable and internet service provider to set up an installation date after the move.

Declutter your former home

Start decluttering early before moving. Though, for some it can be a daunting task, decluttering not only lessens the cost of moving but also helps you make money before you move by selling unneeded items that are still in good working condition. Go to each room you have in your house and evaluate what items you wanted to bring to your new home, and what items you want to sell or donate.

It is not only about money. When you carry less stuff you can also get more space in your new home especially when you're downsizing.

Change your locks

In any home, security is a top priority. You never know how many people have a copy of the keys. You must schedule a professional locksmith to come by or if you feel comfortable doing it, you can change the lock yourself. Re-key all the doors and check if your doors and windows close tightly and securely.

Check smoke detectors

Your family's safety is important. Inspect smoke alarms and make sure they work. If not then you can replace them immediately. Also, make sure that smoke detectors are placed in the right area.

Meet the neighbours

Not all people find this process easy. And if you think knocking on your neighbour's door feels awkward and too invasive, you can try to catch them up while they are outside. Try doing outdoor activities like gardening or if you have a dog, taking them out for a walk is also a great way to meet neighbours.

You can also throw a housewarming party and invite your neighbours. Create a welcoming environment by giving them a house tour and by serving some refreshments.

Following the tips above can make your move less stressful. And if you're still looking for professionals in Canada to help lighten your load during your move, submit a listing on Top Move and save yourself from stress.
