Moving home soon? We all know that the kitchen is probably the hardest room to pack and that goes double when you consider moving heavy and bulky appliances such as the fridge and freezer. This valuable appliance requires careful planning to ensure that it doesn’t defrost and leak while in transit and it arrives ready to use in your new location. Of course, you don’t want to spend extra cash on buying new ones especially if it’s a result of an avoidable mistake during a move.

You can call on professional moving companies in Canada to move the fridge for you. However, if that’s not an option, here are a few strategies on how to prepare, clean, and secure your fridge for moving.

Empty the fridge

You need to clear out everything in the fridge. There should be nothing in your fridge on moving day to reduce its weight and make it safer to move. Make sure you empty all contents and get rid of anything you will not be eating before the move. Once it’s empty, take out the glass shelves, organizers, and lids, then cover them with packing paper and store them in boxes or sealed tubs.

Clean out and defrost your refrigerator

After emptying your fridge, you will need to defrost it until all accumulated ice has melted. Disconnect the water lines and wiring and coil up the cord securely. Leave towels on the floor to soak up any excess water that may drip. After that, wipe down all surfaces with a disinfectant product thoroughly and allow it to dry. Leave the doors open to air dry for at least 24 hours so it will completely thaw inside.

Pack your refrigerator carefully

To pack it correctly, secure the power cords in place with packing tape to the back of the fridge to prevent tripping on it during the move. From there, use bungee cords or moving straps wrapped around the fridge to seal the doors shut. Then cover the unit in a protective wrapping or moving blankets to avoid damaging it or your home on the way out.

Getting your fridge ready for transport

Once the fridge or freezer is ready, it is now time to move them in the moving truck.

Use a moving dolly: Making use of a moving dolly can be of great benefit to move your fridge or freezer will make it easier.  If you are planning to hire a moving company, they certainly have this on their moving equipment. If you are having a DIY move, you need to rent one.

Slide the refrigerator away from the wall and secure it to the dolly or sometimes you need to tilt the fridge slightly. When your fridge is evenly positioned in the dolly, secure the fridge or freezer to the dolly by using moving straps or bungees.

With assistance from your chosen moving company, place the fridge or freezer into the moving truck. Make sure that it sits in the upright position the entire time. Avoid titling them since it will cause the oil from the compressor to seep into the cooling tube that might cause damage to your fridge.

Moving the fridge to its new home

Once you’ve moved into your new home, wait a few hours before plugging the fridge back in so the oil in the compressor can settle – ensuring that your appliance isn’t damaged. Even if it's placed in an upright position, there might be some oils or leaks from the compressor and might cause damage to your freezer.
